I love Halloween. I love coming up with a costume every year, digging through thrift shops, and putting together an original look. For those short on ideas, or who have budgetary restrictions, here are four costumes I’ve come up with in the past, and about how much they cost me.
In 2011, I decided to channel Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Dress: The dress was actually a 5-7-9 jumpsuit I purchased at Goodwill for $6. The top portion fit perfectly, so I had the pant legs’ inner seams removed and sewn together to make a dress.
Pearls: The pearls were purchased at a flea market for a $1 per strand.
Earrings: Borrowed from Vintage Mahal.
Gloves: Target, $5.
Shoes: I was lucky enough to still have a pair of kitten heels that were actually in a bag of stuff to get rid of.
Cigarette stick: Party City, $5.
Tiara: I bought a pack of favor-sized tiaras from Party City and used one, $3.50.
TOTAL COST: Around $24.
My 2014 Halloween costume was an ode to my TV #WCE: The silver-haired Game of Thrones badass known as Daenerys Targaryen. Khaleesi. Mother of Dragons. The Unburnt. Breaker of Chains. You catch my drift.
Wig: Purchased for about $6 brand new from an Out of the Closet thrift store. It was originally a “Valley Girl” wig but I removed the pink head band, brushed out the ponytail, and braided the hair to get the Khaleesi look.
Dress & necklace: Purchased for $5 from a Salvation Army. It was also brand new and originally meant to be the queen’s dress from 300. (S/o to Lena Headey for another great role!)
Shoulder dragon: Purchased for about $7 from Target. It is one of those How To Train Your Dragon toys and I filled the red markings in with a black Sharpie. I then used double sided tape to stand the dragon on my shoulder. For stability, I tied one of the dragon’s wings to my halter and covered it with my hair. The whole process was a pain in the ass, but everyone got the point.
TOTAL COST: $18
Dora the Explorer
This costume was done during my FSU days. Not photographed: Dora drinking out of a red solo cup.
Wig: $25 at a costume shop.
Orange pants: $8 or so from Old Navy on clearance.
Pink shirt: $4 from Michael’s.
Velcro shoes: $10 from Kmart.
Socks: $2 or $3? I’m guessing I bought them at Kmart or the Dollar Store. Sorry, I can’t recall.
Yellow bracelet: At a flea market or the Dollar Store. I didn’t spend more than a $1 on it.
Backpack: This was the only licensed Dora product I purchased. I believe I found it at Target for about $10.
TOTAL COST: Around $60.
Waldo and I shared the same haircut, love for travel, and tendency to live elusively. This was my 2012 Halloween costume.
Shirt: Red and white striped sweater hoodie from Marshalls, $15.
Bag: Red and white clutch from Goodwill, $3.
Hat: Crotchet DIY hat. The materials were about $5 from Joanne’s.
Glasses: The Dollar Store, $1.
I also wore red button earrings and ballet flats that I already had in my closet.
TOTAL COST: $24
